Laguna de Apoyo Nature Reserve is located between Masaya and Granada, less than one hour drive from Managua. The Apoyo volcanic crater interior has a lot of forest which hosts lots of kinds of wildlife, surrounding a lake with clear, blue water which is warm year-round.

The biological research station "Estacion Biologica" supports research, conservation, education, and local development initiatives in the area of Laguna de Apoyo Nature Reserve, and beyond. Our work is not limited to Laguna de Apoyo Nature Reserve, however. We also support work in other protected areas, such as Volcano Masaya National Park, and also in initiatives important to the social and economic development of Nicaragua, such as Tumarin hydroelectric facility, Blue Power wind energy, and the Nicaragua Interoaceanic Grand Canal.

Estacion Biologica Laguna de Apoyo is also the home of Apoyo Spanish School. Here, volunteers, interns and visitors to Nicaragua can learn Spanish in an immersion setting, with the lake available day and night for leisurely swims.
This is how clear Laguna de Apoyo can be!
The director of the Gaia Program, Jeffrey McCrary, and other members of the Gaia staff can provide useful information and presentations for groups and individuals who wish to learn more about the Laguna de Apoyo Nature Reserve.
